Craft with me: Making a storage book for my BJD COAs
My COAs are scattered all over my studio... some are in a drawer, some on a shelf, some still in the doll boxes, kid Vahn was sitting on his for some reason?? Anyway, I've been giving my doll boxes a hard look lately, trying to decide if it's time to get rid of some, and that made me realize I needed somewhere to store my COAs properly. I recently used some of my literary award money from earlier this year to treat myself to a notebook punch and binding machine, so why not create my own notebook full of pocket pages?
Here's how I make my COA storage book, from start to finish! I have a lot of fancy tools, but you could do the same stuff with a pair of scissors and a regular hole punch... i...

I'm starting my next BJD customization, and it's WAY overdue
Просмотров 47014 дней назад
For a long time, I've been saying I was going to work on a new outfit for Vahn, my Iplehouse SID Claude. I started a couple times, but never did anything meaningful. So how long has he been waiting? Oof... I don't even really want to talk about that. His new outfit is finally underway, though. I'll walk you through the wait, the plans I have for this doll, and show you the first piece I make......

I've customized a few Nendoroid dolls on my channel so far, but I recently decided to add my first official Nendoroids to my collection. Today I'm unboxing the Breath of the Wild version of Zelda! I'll be back to doll projects soon, don't worry - just needed a little breat...
Testing Artify extreme detail + dry brush sets for BJD faceups!

A bit back, I was contacted by the art supply company Artify. They asked if I was interested in trying some of their brushes for doll faceups. I'm always looking for the next best supply, so I gave them a try! I tried the extreme detail brush set for brows and lashes, and the dry brush set for pastels and blushing. They sent me the brushes for free, but would I pay money for them? You can proba...
Repairing a broken BJD head

This doll suffered an unfortunate break during shipping, resulting in the back of the head and part of the headcap shattering into pieces. Imagine how devastated the owner must have been! The doll's owner elected not to have any filler added to the cracks since they were very smooth, as any fillers would have required sanding, and that woul...

BJD Sewing tutorial: Pocket vest for 1/4 dolls

My first time cutting a premade doll wig (and setting realistic expectations)

There's always something new to try in this hobby... even after being part of it for so long, I'd still never cut any premade doll wigs. Just ones I'd made myself! Since I wasn't content with the mature style of the alpaca wig I made, I decided to try cutting this wig that was a $5 doll show find to see if it would give me something a little softer. Real clever to have Skyward Sword's Hylian Shield paired with the Master Sword in Twilight Princess. Hylian Shield on Link's right arm and the Master Sword in his left hand. If Nintendo decides on another Hyrule Warriors collab w/ Koei Tecmo, they should keep left-handed Link as the main protag, his green tunic over his chainmail and his long-sleeved shirt, his green hat on his head, his pants, and his boots from Twilight Princess's era, but w/ Skyward Sword's Hylian Shield (horizontal carry on his right arm) paired with the Master Sword (and the back scabbard in Twilight Princess).

      American Girl dolls are a little unusual, but I've found using the standards for 1:3 are usually the closest for them. They might still need a little adjustment, but it'll get you in the right neighborhood!

    I only have one doll that has a CoA (the others I 3D printed), but I think I'm going to try this as well. Some time back I got MissyImaginings registry files to give myself a way to easily keep track of measurements and such - and while it does have the option of a CoA pocket as well, it doesn't really have a way to personalize it for each doll. This does that - and since her pages are half-letter size - has the bonus of also functioning as a divider sheet between each doll... since I also have a project list and individual project pages for each doll as well. I keep everything in a half-sized loose-leaf binder, so won't need the fancy binding... ... Even though part of me is hoping your final versions of the coiling rod do make it to Thingiverse or Printables... even if I don't have the coil punch. The hindbrain is bouncing at the idea of making my own spiral bound sketchbooks... =l= Great video as always!

    • @LomisPlayground
      @LomisPlayground 5 дней назад

      That's a great idea to keep the measurements with the dolls! I should probably make measurement info sheets to keep in with mine... I understand how appealing the idea of the spiral notebooks is, I was not able to resist LOL I saw the punch go on sale for $35 with free shipping and I was like yep, don't need that, getting it anyway. The shiny new tool impulse is hard to resist. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my coil spools... I think making them a little taller might be better, and more sizes? Hmm...

    I have a question about the numbers featured on the sealants usable for airbrushing, I wanted to buy the Vallejo matt polyurethane varnish with the number 27.651 but I don't know if I would need thinner for that or if water would be an adequate thinner as well, if need be

    • @LomisPlayground
      @LomisPlayground 5 дней назад

      Great question! The polyurethane varnish is still usable for dolls, but it tends to be a lot thicker so it will require more thinning and as a result, will need more coats to ensure full coverage. Water is always an acceptable thinner for water-based paints, so no worries there! Vallejo only makes water-based paints, so it's safe for their entire line. The primary advantage of using airbrush thinner or flow aid as a thinner is that it reduces surface tension of the paints when thinned so it's less likely to bead up when applied. However, I've thinned tons of paints with just water and had no problems at all. The primary differences to be aware of are that Vallejo's polyurethane matte varnish is less matte than the acrylic matte, but the acrylic matte is one of the flattest sealants I've ever used so it would be hard to compare to that anyway. Just be prepared for the possibility of a slightly dewy finish rather than something ultra-matte... and also, polyurethane can be more prone to yellowing over time than the acrylic varnish. This can be reduced with a UV-protective top coat if that's something you're interested in. Hope that helps!

    A good option for getting some scale chainmail without having to make it all your self is to purchase and strategically pull apart a Cut Glove. they're gloves that are meant to protect your hands from knives when chopping food so theyre made of tiny chainmail ^^

  • @PhoenyxAshe
    @PhoenyxAshe 19 дней назад

    I know you mentioned already starting the chainmail... but if you are wanting a slightly faster interim option, I have two possibles. One: the purl side of knitted stockinet stitch has been used frequently as "faux chain". Extra bonus - less likely to scratch (depending on the type of yarn used). Two: there are a number of 3D printing styles of chainmail on both Thingiverse and Printables. Most of them are print in place, and a few of them are parametric, so you wouldn't have to finagle scaling as much. Oh! And as a bonus, while I was digging through the two websites, I stumbled onto "EVA foam chainmail". After looking at it... well, I'm still hesitant to using EVA foam in my laser cutter, I am wondering if I could create a wire jig that would have a similar result.

    • @LomisPlayground

What the heck is a gathering stitch? So after watching a couple more of these tutorials I went and played around with my machine on a scrap of fabric, and wrote down what settings gave me the results I think are good. Gonna waste a lot more thread but I think it'll be worth it to not have all these raw edges anymore in any of my projects, my size or for the dolls. Thank you Lomi!

    The dry brush set looks similar to the Artis Opus line. I'm more of a mini painter now and haven't painted bjd faces in over a decade, but this video popped up in my feed. The price point doesn't seem too terrible for either set if someone is just starting out! The case is also a nice bonus for storage.

      There are definitely a lot more options for faceups than there used to be, and I'm glad for it! I still think there's a time where most people should consider upgrading to higher-end tools, but it sure is nice to see some entry-level pricing.

    I have some very old brushes similar to the dry brushes that I got on super clearance at a ceramics shop and was never able to find replacements or upgrades for, so this was a nice surprise to find! While they aren't exactly the same as my old brushes, I am very curious about how they might compare since these sound very similar. I also appreciate how you described everything in such detail! So thank you for this~

      I'm glad it was helpful for you! I know how disappointing it is when a favorite brush wears out and you can't find a good replacement for it... I still have a few I'm trying to find good swaps for, but maybe someday.

    Those are beautiful brushes and I really like the case. The 2nd set reminds me of my own makeup brushes. Maybe they will add the brushes you described in the future. "And it only takes a couple of seconds for me to figure out that..yeah, I love this!" I think you are going to have some new favorite brushes out of these sets. It is fun to try new things and discover new techniques to use. I'd say these brushes are a hit!

      Yeah, some people love makeup brushes for blushing but I always found the bristles were too long for me to control them well. These are a great substitute because they're the same shape and they're soft like that, but much shorter bristles means the pastel dust goes where I actually want it!
